Dennis Itumbi & MCSK CEO Ezekiel Mutua clash over gov’t role in musicians royalties

Expressing his considerations on Twitter, Itumbi directed sharp criticism in direction of the MCSK CEO, Dr Ezekiel Mutua.

“Expensive Ezekiel Mutua, yaani, we’re paying musicians peanuts as royalties and paying the collectors hundreds of thousands. and you discover nothing unsuitable with that mannequin? Musicians = PEANUTS/ Per 12 months . CMOS CEO = 1.3M Per thirty days. Hii apana! Allow us to empower our artists, on that, like Paul in Scripture, My Eyes are firmly on the ending line!” stated Itumbi.

In response, Mutua defended the autonomy of collective administration organisations (CMOs) like MCSK, asserting that authorities interference would undermine their independence.

“The federal government has no enterprise interfering within the operations of CMOs. They’re ruled by their articles of affiliation and bylaws. And by the best way, we’re all for accountability. We’re all for expertise. We’re simply in opposition to authorities interference in non-public property,” stated Mutua.

Itumbi countered by proposing a digital overhaul of the present system, advocating for a government-led initiative to create a clear digital platform for managing royalties.

He harassed the necessity for artists to obtain their rightful compensation promptly and with out intermediaries, highlighting the potential of digital platforms to streamline processes and decrease fraud.

Whereas acknowledging the advantages of digital platforms, Mutua reiterated considerations about authorities interference and the danger of cartel affect. He emphasised the necessity to safeguard non-public entities from exterior manipulation.

He reassured stakeholders of his dedication to resolving the difficulty in favour of artists, promising a transformative change within the administration of royalties.
